Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are between 18 and 75 years old (any gender)
- You have had your first-ever minor stroke caused by a blockage in a large blood vessel, or a "mini-stroke" (TIA)
- You started anti-clotting (antiplatelet) medication within the first 24 hours of your stroke symptoms beginning
- You are not eligible for the clot-busting drug called rt-PA (tPA)
Who may not be able to join:
- You are unable to attend a follow-up appointment 90 days after joining the trial
- Your stroke symptoms were very mild (low severity score) or got better quickly before brain scans were completed
- You have a known ongoing or recurring brain or nervous system condition, such as epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, a brain tumor (meningioma), or a past head injury that left lasting neurological effects
- You had a seizure at the time your stroke began
- You have signs of serious failure of a major organ in your body
- You have an active cancer
- You had a heart attack within the past six weeks
- You were taking warfarin (a blood thinner), ticagrelor (another blood thinner) regularly in the week before coming to hospital, or chemotherapy within the past year
- You have an active stomach ulcer or have had stomach or bowel surgery
- You have had any bleeding episode within the past year
- You have had major surgery within the past three months
- You have a known allergy to the medications being studied in this trial
- Certain blood test or vital sign results on arrival are outside the accepted range — including blood clotting levels, blood sugar, blood pressure, or platelet count (confirm with trial site)
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Your stroke was caused by a blood clot in a vein (venous thrombosis) rather than an artery
- Your stroke happened after a cardiac arrest or a severe drop in blood pressure
- You have any medical reason that prevents you from safely taking the study drugs
