Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 or older
- People who are able to lift their arm out to the side (this will be checked during an initial screening appointment)
- People for whom an MRI scan is considered safe
- People who are able to follow on-screen visual instructions while wearing special vision-correction goggles that are safe to use inside an MRI scanner
- People who do not have any damage or lesions in the brainstem or cerebellum (the lower and back parts of the brain)
- People without serious ongoing medical conditions
- People who have enough concentration and thinking ability to focus on a task
- People who can communicate in English or Spanish
Additional criteria that apply to stroke participants only:
- People who have had exactly one stroke caused by a blocked blood vessel (ischemic stroke) on one side of the brain, in a specific brain region supplied by the Middle Cerebral Artery, at least one year before joining the study (confirmed by medical or imaging records)
- People whose weakness is on one side of the body only, with moderate-to-severe arm movement difficulties, as measured by a specific arm assessment scale with a score between 10 and 45 (Upper Extremity Fugl-Meyer score)
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have anything in or on their body that makes MRI scanning unsafe (for example, certain metal implants)
- People with severe claustrophobia (extreme fear of enclosed spaces)
- People who are pregnant
- People who are currently imprisoned
- People who are considered part of a vulnerable population (confirm with trial site)
- People who have been diagnosed with, or have a history of, multiple sclerosis, a brain tumour, radiation treatment to the brain, traumatic brain injury, dementia, or Parkinson's disease
- People who are currently taking part in another treatment-based research study
- People who are currently taking medications known to reduce activity in the brain and nervous system
