Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged between 18 and 80 years
- People who have been diagnosed with locally advanced, inoperable esophageal squamous cell cancer (a type of throat/food pipe cancer) and have completed a full course of treatment aimed at curing it, such as chemotherapy combined with radiation therapy
- People whose cancer was considered inoperable for reasons such as: the cancer being in the upper part of the food pipe near the neck, being classified as an advanced stage (T4), having spread to nearby lymph nodes near the collarbone, or being unable to have surgery for personal or health reasons — or those whose cancer did not respond to pre-surgery treatment, or those who have had cancer return after surgery but cannot have further surgery (with at least one measurable area of cancer visible on scans)
- People whose scans show no sign of cancer returning or spreading, checked 2–3 weeks after completing their full course of treatment
- People who are able to provide a fresh tissue sample from their tumor at the start of the trial
- People whose major organs (such as liver, kidneys, and heart) are functioning normally
- People with a general health and activity score of 1 or less on a standard medical scale, meaning they are fully active or have only minor limitations in physical activity
- People of childbearing potential who agree to use contraception during the trial
- People who are willing to take part and have signed a consent form
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have previously developed a fistula (an abnormal opening or tunnel) caused by the primary cancer
- People considered to be at high risk of serious bleeding in the digestive tract, or of a hole or opening forming in the food pipe
- People with poor nutritional health
- People who experienced serious immune-related side effects (graded 3 or higher) during their earlier treatment, such as severe inflammation of the lungs or heart
- People who currently have symptoms or signs of interstitial lung disease (a type of lung condition affecting the tissue around the air sacs)
- People with any serious or uncontrolled medical condition
- People who currently have another type of cancer at the same time
- People who have other autoimmune diseases, or who have been taking immune-suppressing medications or steroids long-term
- People who have difficulty communicating or who are unlikely to be able to attend regular long-term follow-up appointments
- People whom the trial doctor considers unsuitable for any other reason
