Who might be able to join this trial:
- You have agreed to take part and given your verbal consent
- You are over 50 years old
- You were over 50 years old when your symptoms first started
- You have pain and inflammation around the shoulders and/or hips (the large joints connecting your limbs to your body)
- Your blood tests show signs of inflammation (raised ESR above 20 mm/hr and/or raised CRP above 10 mg/l)
- You score 4 or more points from the following: morning stiffness lasting more than 45 minutes (2 points), hip pain or reduced hip movement (1 point), certain arthritis-related blood tests (rheumatoid factor and anti-CCP) coming back negative (2 points), and no pain in other joints (1 point)
Who may not be able to join:
- You are not covered by national health insurance
- You are under a legal protection order such as curatorship or guardianship
- You are subject to any other form of legal safeguard (confirm with trial site)
- You are pregnant or currently breastfeeding
- You are unable to give your own consent to participate
- You have received steroid or immune-suppressing treatment in the month before joining the trial
- You have a medical reason why you cannot take steroid treatment
- You currently have an active infection, cancer, or another inflammatory or autoimmune condition
- You have a form of rheumatoid arthritis that started later in life
- You have an allergy to iodine or significant kidney problems (if a CT scan with dye is needed for your imaging)
- You have poorly controlled diabetes (if a PET scan is needed for your imaging)
- Your final diagnosis turns out to be a cancer-related form of this condition
- Your final diagnosis turns out to be rheumatoid arthritis
- Your PET scan result comes back negative, if it was done within 72 hours of starting steroid treatment
