Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have had a stroke more than 6 months ago that left them with weakness or movement problems on one side of the body (people who are more than 4 months post-stroke may be able to consent early, but final acceptance into the trial will not happen until after the 6-month mark)
- People aged 18 to 85 years old
- People who weigh less than 350 pounds
- People who are able to follow a 3-step instruction
- People who are able to walk at their own chosen pace — between a very slow and a moderate speed — without someone physically supporting them, though a brace below the knee and/or a walking aid may be used if needed
- People whose leg movement after stroke falls below a certain level on a standard medical assessment scale (confirm with trial site)
- People who have received medical clearance to take part in the study
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have a balance and coordination condition affecting the part of the brain called the cerebellum
- People with uncontrolled heart, lung, or metabolic conditions that limit exercise; active bone growth in abnormal places in the body; a history of repeated leg fractures; or a prior orthopaedic or nerve/brain injury that, in the lead researcher's judgement, could affect safety, ability to complete the study, or the study's goals
- People who are currently receiving physical therapy as part of another program
- People who have had more than 50 units of Botox injected into the lower limb — or, for people who wear an ankle-foot brace, more than 50 units injected into the lower limb above the knee — within the past three months
