Who might be able to join this trial:
For the mother/primary caregiver:
- The primary caregiver of the child with asthma must be a woman (self-identified) who identifies as Black
- The caregiver must be 18 years of age or older
- The caregiver must speak English
- The caregiver must be the main person looking after the child and attending the community-based asthma clinic
- The caregiver must score 8 or higher on a standard depression screening questionnaire (the PHQ-9) taken during the child's clinic visit
For the child:
- The child must be under 18 years old for the full 6-month study period
- The child must have health insurance through a public program (such as Medicaid)
- The child must have been diagnosed by a doctor with persistent asthma
Who may not be able to join:
For the mother/primary caregiver:
- Caregivers who are assessed as being at high risk of suicide at the time of the child's clinic visit
- Caregivers who have a diagnosis of bipolar disorder or mania
- Caregivers who have a diagnosis of schizophrenia
- Caregivers who are currently experiencing substance use or dependence issues
- Caregivers who are currently in a situation involving serious physical violence from a partner
- Caregivers who, based on staff assessment during screening, are not able to meaningfully take part in the study activities
For the child:
- Children who have significant other health conditions alongside asthma, such as heart or breathing disorders, serious developmental delays, diabetes, seizure disorders, or sickle cell disease
- Children who are already taking part in another study that involves a behavioural program or a new type of asthma treatment
