Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are 18 years of age or older
  • Your symptoms match those of a new acute stroke, and the medical team considers it unlikely to be a condition mimicking a stroke
  • You have not had a stroke in the last 3 months
  • It has been 9 hours or less since you were last known to be well before your stroke symptoms started
  • You meet one of these three conditions: your stroke severity score (NIHSS) is 6 or higher AND a blocked artery in your brain has been confirmed by a scan; OR your stroke severity score is 6 or higher AND a specific sign of artery blockage is visible on a standard brain scan; OR your stroke severity score is 12 or higher (confirm with trial site)
  • You are alert and largely conscious, as shown by a near-normal score on the consciousness part of the stroke severity assessment
  • You had little to no disability in daily life before this stroke
  • Your brain scan shows that a large enough area of your brain is still healthy (a score of at least 6 on a specific brain scan scale)
  • You are already being planned for transfer to a hospital that can perform a procedure to remove or treat the clot in your brain
  • You or your legal representative has signed a consent form agreeing to take part

Who may not be able to join:

  • You have a known history of severe lung disease, severe heart failure (Class III or IV), a current lung infection, or inhaled material into your lungs before enrolling
  • Your breathing rate is very slow (10 breaths per minute or fewer) or very fast (30 breaths per minute or more)
  • You already need extra oxygen or a breathing machine to keep your blood oxygen levels stable
  • You had a seizure at the time your stroke started
  • You are experiencing vomiting, a very severe headache, or loss of consciousness
  • Your stroke symptoms were getting better quickly, or you may have had a mini-stroke (TIA) before giving consent
  • Your symptoms suggest bleeding around the brain (subarachnoid hemorrhage), even if your scan appears normal
  • A brain scan shows a tumour (other than a small, specific type) or an abnormal tangle of blood vessels in your brain
  • You are a woman of childbearing age and are known to be pregnant or have a positive pregnancy test
  • You have another serious illness that means you are not expected to live for at least 90 days
  • It is unlikely that you will be able to complete a follow-up appointment 90 days after the trial
  • You are currently taking part in another clinical treatment trial, or finished one within the last 30 days
  • You are already taking certain other brain-protecting medications (confirm with trial site)
  • A brain scan shows active bleeding inside your brain
  • A brain scan shows that brain structures have shifted out of their normal position due to swelling or pressure
