Who might be able to join this trial:
This trial has three different groups of participants. Here is who may qualify for each:
Group 1 – People with Alzheimer's Disease (AD):
- You are 60 years old or older
- You have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease by a neurologist, confirmed through brain scans, a spinal tap, and thinking/memory tests
- You have no history of other brain or nervous system diseases (a past stroke is okay if it has fully resolved with no remaining symptoms)
- You have no history of lung or breathing diseases
- You have no history of surgery, cancer, or radiation treatment involving the head or neck area
- You are currently eating or drinking something by mouth (any amount)
- You are able to follow simple instructions
- You are able and willing to give consent, or a legal guardian can give consent on your behalf
Group 2 – Care Partners of People with Alzheimer's Disease:
- You are the primary caregiver of someone with Alzheimer's disease
- You are willing to fill out questionnaires and take part in an interview
Group 3 – Healthy Adults Living in the Community:
- You are 60 years old or older
- You have no history of brain or nervous system diseases (a past stroke is okay if it has fully resolved with no remaining symptoms)
- You have no history of lung or breathing diseases
- You have no history of surgery, cancer, or radiation treatment involving the head or neck area
- You have never had difficulty swallowing, based on your own report
- You score at or above the 25th percentile on a memory and thinking test, adjusted for your sex, age, education, and race (confirm with trial site)
Who may not be able to join:
Group 1 – People with Alzheimer's Disease:
- You are younger than 60 years old
- You have been diagnosed with a different type of dementia (not Alzheimer's)
- You have a history of other brain, nervous system, or breathing diseases
- You have a history of surgery, cancer, or radiation treatment to the head or neck area
- You are not eating or drinking anything by mouth at all
- You are unable to follow basic instructions
- You are unable to give consent and scored below 15 on a specific consent assessment tool, and no legal guardian or healthcare decision-maker is available to consent on your behalf (confirm with trial site)
Group 2 – Care Partners:
- You are not the main/primary caregiver of someone with Alzheimer's disease
- You are unwilling to complete questionnaires or take part in an interview
Group 3 – Healthy Adults:
- You are younger than 60 years old
- You have a history of brain or nervous system disease
- You have a history of lung or breathing disease
- You have a history of surgery, cancer, or radiation treatment to the head or neck area
- You have had difficulty swallowing in the past
