Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 18 to 90 years old
- People whose life expectancy is greater than 12 months
- People with a diagnosis of primary varicose veins (a condition where leg veins become enlarged and twisted), with disease severity falling within a specific range (called CEAP classification C2–C6), affecting the main vein running along the inside of the leg (called the great saphenous vein or GSV), along with symptoms such as pain, burning, heaviness, fatigue, itchy skin, or night cramps
- People whose ultrasound scan shows the affected leg vein measures between 3mm and 12mm wide while standing
- People whose ultrasound scan confirms the affected leg vein sits within the surrounding tissue layer or is more than 1cm below the skin surface
- People having the microwave vein treatment on one leg only
- People who are willing to attend all check-ups and examinations required by the study
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have a blood clot in the great saphenous vein, or a clot in the deeper leg veins, or a previous history of deep vein clots or a blood clot in the lungs
- People whose varicose veins have come back after a previous varicose vein operation
- People whose great saphenous vein is so severely twisted that the treatment tube (catheter) is unlikely to be able to pass through it
- People with severely reduced blood flow to the lower legs, as measured by a specific blood pressure comparison test (ankle brachial pressure index below 0.8)
- People with a known allergy to any of the medicines or materials used in this study
- People who have a pacemaker or defibrillator already fitted, or who are currently taking regular blood-thinning medication (such as warfarin or heparin)
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People who are unable or unwilling to take part in the study
- People who are currently taking part in another medical research study involving a drug or device
- People currently being treated for a skin cancer (other than certain common, less serious types of skin cancer)
- People who use narcotic or anti-inflammatory pain medicines every day to manage pain caused by their vein condition
- People whom the treating doctor considers unsuitable for this type of vein treatment
