Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are over 18 years old
- You have been diagnosed with Crohn's Disease or Ulcerative Colitis with mild to moderate symptoms affecting the colon for at least 6 months (confirm with trial site for specific score requirements)
- Your medications for inflammatory bowel disease (such as certain anti-inflammatory drugs, immune-suppressing tablets, or biologic injections) have been at a stable dose for at least 3 months
- You are being admitted as an inpatient to the Department for Internal and Integrative Medicine at the Sozialstiftung Bamberg hospital in Germany for your regular treatment
- You have a medical reason to have a colonoscopy (a camera examination of the bowel) using a special imaging technique called confocal laser endomicroscopy
- You are willing and able to sign a consent form agreeing to take part
Who may not be able to join:
- Your inflammatory bowel disease does not involve inflammation in the colon (for example, Crohn's Disease that only affects other parts of the digestive system)
- You are currently experiencing a severe flare-up of your inflammatory bowel disease
- You have a very high level of a blood inflammation marker called CRP (100 mg/l or above) (confirm with trial site)
- You have a stoma bag connected before the colon (called an ileostomy)
- You regularly eat large amounts of blueberries (roughly 300g or more of farmed blueberries, or 150g or more of wild blueberries per week), or you have received a blueberry-based treatment in the last 3 months
- You have taken part in another treatment-based clinical trial within the last 30 days
- You have a known intolerance or allergy to blueberries or their components, such as certain natural pigments (anthocyanins) or fructose (fruit sugar)
- You have a known serious infectious disease such as HIV, hepatitis B, or hepatitis C
