Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have been diagnosed with breast cancer or a tumor in the breast that is no larger than 3 cm across, and who have previously had breast-conserving surgery (such as a lumpectomy) for either invasive breast cancer or a non-invasive form called DCIS.
- People whose cancer has come back only in the breast, with no signs of cancer spread outside the breast shown on imaging scans (staged as N0M0 before surgery).
- People for whom at least 3 years have passed since finishing their previous radiation therapy.
- People whose new breast cancer can be treated with another breast-conserving surgery in a way that does not require moving tissue from another part of the body to restore the breast shape.
- People who are at least 55 years old at the time of surgery.
- People who are willing to take part in the study and are able to give informed consent.
Who may not be able to join:
- People who received an extra targeted dose of radiation (called a "boost") as part of their previous radiation treatment.
- People whose pre-surgery assessments suggest the cancer is present in more than one area of the breast, or where the area to be removed is larger than 3 cm.
- People for whom the radiation therapy planned in this study cannot be safely delivered — for example, due to limited shoulder movement, a pacemaker located in the radiation area, or a skin condition such as scleroderma.
- People who are unable or unwilling to give informed consent to participate in the study.
- People who have cancer that has spread outside the breast, such as to the lymph nodes under the arm or to other parts of the body.
