- People who have been recently diagnosed with a new tumour of the oesophagus (food pipe) or the area where the oesophagus meets the stomach
- People who are scheduled for planned surgery aimed at removing the cancer completely (either open surgery or keyhole surgery)
- People who have not yet received any cancer treatment for their current diagnosis
