Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are 18 years of age or older
- You have had a stroke or mini-stroke (a brief stroke-like episode) where the cause was not clearly identified, confirmed by brain scans (CT or MRI)
- Scans of the blood vessels in your neck and brain showed no significant blockages or build-up of fatty deposits
- No known heart-related cause of the stroke was found (such as an irregular heartbeat, blood clots in the heart, certain heart valve problems, or a weakly pumping heart)
- No other specific cause of the stroke was identified (such as a blood-clotting disorder, inflamed blood vessels, a torn blood vessel, or drug use)
- You have already been referred to have a small heart monitor device implanted under the skin to check for irregular heart rhythms
- You are able to read and sign a consent form agreeing to take part
Who may not be able to join:
- You have already been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter (specific types of irregular heartbeat)
- A heart-related cause of your stroke has since been identified
- You already take SGLT2 inhibitor medication (a type of tablet) for heart failure or diabetes (Type 1 or Type 2)
- You have a history of, or risk factors for, a dangerous condition called diabetic ketoacidosis, including very restricted eating or a history of alcohol misuse
- You have had an allergic reaction to empagliflozin (the study medication) or any of its ingredients
- You already have another implanted heart device, such as a pacemaker or defibrillator, that would make the implanted heart monitor unnecessary
- You have a condition such as dementia that could affect the results of the study or make it difficult to participate
- You do not wish to take part in the trial
