Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have been diagnosed with probable Alzheimer's Disease or Vascular Dementia that is rated as mild or moderate in severity.
- People aged 65 years or older, of any gender.
- People who live in the community (not in a care facility) and have a caregiver who is able to attend study visits with them and take part in the study.
- People who are able to give their own consent, or who have a legal guardian who can consent on their behalf (with the person's agreement).
- People whose legal guardian and caregiver are the same person.
- People, along with their caregiver, who can read and speak English well enough to take part in study visits.
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose dementia is caused by something other than Alzheimer's Disease or Vascular Dementia.
- People who have significant agitation or aggression that requires treatment with antipsychotic medication.
- People who experience delusions (false beliefs) or hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that aren't there).
- People with serious mental health conditions, including severe depression.
- People with unstable, severe, or poorly managed medical conditions identified through physical examination or medical history.
- People with a vision or hearing problem that would prevent them from completing memory and thinking tests.
- People who currently have diarrhea.
- People who have a known allergy or sensitivity to rifaximin, any of its ingredients, or related antibiotic medicines called rifamycins.
- People who have taken antibiotics in the past 6 months.
- People who are taking medications that are known to interact with rifaximin (note: certain medications called P-glycoprotein inhibitors may be permitted if discussed with the study doctor).
- People with a history of alcohol or drug misuse.
- People who have taken part in another clinical drug trial within the last 30 days.
