Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are 18 years of age or older
- People who have given their informed consent to participate
- VTE group: People who have been diagnosed with a deep vein thrombosis (a blood clot in a vein) confirmed by ultrasound, OR a pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in the lungs) confirmed by a CT scan
- Heart attack group: People who have shown a specific heart rhythm pattern (ST-segment elevation) on an ECG, AND have a blocked artery identified on a coronary angiogram
- Stroke group: People who have had a stroke confirmed by an MRI scan, AND have an irregular heart rhythm called atrial fibrillation detected by heart monitoring, AND whose stroke occurred in a specific area of the brain associated with that condition
- Healthy group: People who are in good health with no known conditions
Who may not be able to join:
- People under 18 years of age
- People who have not given informed consent
- People with known blood disorders
- People with an active blood cancer
- People with severely reduced kidney function (as measured by a specific blood test called eGFR being below 15) or those on dialysis
- VTE group: People whose pulmonary embolism was found by accident during a CT scan done for a different reason, and who do not also have a blood clot in a vein
- Heart attack group: People whose heart condition was caused by a tear in the artery wall, or by a stress-related heart condition called Takotsubo cardiomyopathy
- Stroke group: People whose stroke appears to have been caused by disease in a large blood vessel, rather than an irregular heart rhythm
- Healthy group: People with any known current or ongoing illness, or anyone who has previously had a blood clot, heart attack, stroke, or similar condition
