Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have had their first-ever ischemic stroke (a stroke caused by a blocked blood vessel), confirmed by a CT scan and/or MRI
- People whose stroke occurred between 15 days and 180 days ago
- People aged 18 to 80 years old, of any gender
- People whose swallowing difficulties have been confirmed by a specific swallowing X-ray test called a videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS)
- People who are able to receive acupuncture, electroacupuncture, and injections into the buttock muscle, and are willing to follow the treatment plan
- People who have signed a consent form and are willing to take part in the trial
Who may not be able to join:
- People who had swallowing difficulties before their stroke, or whose swallowing difficulties are not caused by the ischemic stroke
- People with severe difficulties in thinking, memory, or understanding
- People with serious heart, liver, or kidney problems, or serious blood clotting disorders
- People whose test results lead the trial investigator to consider them unsuitable for the study (confirm with trial site)
- People who have had more than one stroke, have previously had brain surgery, or whose stroke was caused by a head injury or brain tumour
- People who had significant neurological problems before their stroke, such as serious vision or hearing loss, inability to speak or understand language, difficulty recognising objects or people, or severe weakness on one side of the body
- Women who are breastfeeding, pregnant, or planning to become pregnant
- People who have a history of fainting from needles, or who have a skin infection at a location where acupuncture would be performed
- People who have a cardiac pacemaker
- People who are allergic to nerve growth factor (NGF)
- People who are unable to undergo the VFSS swallowing test
- People who have taken medications in the past 2 months that may affect brain activity levels (confirm with trial site)
- People who are currently in another clinical trial, or who finished participating in another clinical trial within the last 3 months
