Who might be able to join this trial:

• Women aged 18 or older who have been diagnosed with breast cancer through laboratory testing of tissue samples, and who need a specific type of mastectomy (where the skin and/or nipple is preserved) for any medical reason, such as the cancer covering a large area of the breast

Who may not be able to join:

• People who have a history of breast cancer or previous chest wall radiation on the same side of the body being treated (note: having had breast cancer or preventive surgery on the other side is generally allowed)
• People who have a disease affecting how the body makes collagen (a protein important for tissue and healing)
• People who are currently pregnant
• People who are currently breastfeeding
• People who are smoking at the time of joining the trial (a past history of smoking is allowed but must be recorded; the surgical team must be willing to perform the reconstruction, which generally requires the person to have stopped smoking for more than 3 months before the operation)
• People with a body mass index (a measure of body weight relative to height) above 35
• People whose cancer has grown into the skin in a specific way (called cT4d), or whose cancer has spread to other parts of the body, or for whom this type of mastectomy is not considered appropriate
