Who might be able to join this trial:
- Women aged 18 or older who have been diagnosed with breast cancer through laboratory testing of tissue samples, and who need a specific type of mastectomy (where the skin and/or nipple is preserved) for any medical reason, such as the cancer covering a large area of the breast
- Women who need radiation treatment to the chest wall after surgery
- Women who wish to have breast reconstruction after their mastectomy
- People whose general health and ability to carry out daily activities meets a certain minimum level, as measured by a standard medical scoring tool (confirm with trial site)
- People who are willing and able to give written consent to participate and to attend all required study visits and procedures
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have a history of breast cancer or previous chest wall radiation on the same side of the body being treated (note: having had breast cancer or preventive surgery on the other side is generally allowed)
- People who have a disease affecting how the body makes collagen (a protein important for tissue and healing)
- People who are currently pregnant
- People who are currently breastfeeding
- People who are smoking at the time of joining the trial (a past history of smoking is allowed but must be recorded; the surgical team must be willing to perform the reconstruction, which generally requires the person to have stopped smoking for more than 3 months before the operation)
- People with a body mass index (a measure of body weight relative to height) above 35
- People whose cancer has grown into the skin in a specific way (called cT4d), or whose cancer has spread to other parts of the body, or for whom this type of mastectomy is not considered appropriate
