Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have been diagnosed with an acute ischemic stroke (a stroke caused by a blocked blood vessel), confirmed either by a visible area of damage on a CT or MRI scan, or by ongoing physical symptoms lasting more than 24 hours after the stroke began.
- People who have been diagnosed with a transient ischemic attack (TIA, sometimes called a "mini-stroke") that caused temporary symptoms such as difficulty moving or speaking — but not cases where the only symptoms were dizziness, vision changes, or sensory disturbances alone.
- People whose symptoms began within 72 hours before arriving at hospital.
- People who were able to walk without physical help from another person before the stroke or TIA occurred.
- People aged 18 years or older.
- People who are able to give informed consent themselves, or whose legal representative (including a spouse) is able to give consent on their behalf.
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose stroke occurred while they were already in hospital.
- People who are unable to have an MRI scan — for example, due to claustrophobia, pregnancy, a pacemaker, or certain implanted devices.
- People who have a known diagnosis of moderate to severe dementia.
- People who have pre-existing structural brain damage (other than a specific type of age-related white matter change called leukoaraiosis).
- People who have a significant narrowing of a major artery in the neck that affects blood flow (confirm with trial site).
- People who have heart failure where the heart is pumping less than 50% of its normal capacity.
- People who have another ongoing illness known to affect the body's automatic nervous system (which controls functions like heart rate and blood pressure), such as an active infection, a thyroid condition, or a neurodegenerative disorder such as Parkinson's disease or multiple system atrophy.
