Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are between 18 and 50 years old
- You are able to understand and agree to take part in the study on your own
- You can communicate fluently in English
- You are willing and able to follow the study's requirements, including signing a consent form and completing study tasks
- You have the thinking ability to understand the tasks involved, with an estimated IQ above 70
- (If you have schizophrenia) You have been diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder as your main condition
- (If you do not have schizophrenia) You may be selected to participate as a comparison participant, matched to someone in the schizophrenia group based on age, sex, race/ethnicity, and education level
Who may not be able to join:
- You appear to be or have disclosed being under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the study
- You currently use substances such as cocaine or heroin (other than nicotine, alcohol, or cannabis) on a regular basis
- You have a long history of serious problems with substance use (other than nicotine or tobacco)
- You have a significant physical health condition or a neurological condition, such as Parkinson's disease or a history of strokes
- You have a history of traumatic brain injury or a head injury that caused a prolonged loss of consciousness or lasting effects on your thinking or behaviour
- You have had electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) within one month of joining the study
- You have a history of seizures or epilepsy
- You have a psychiatric or medical condition that is currently untreated or not well managed
- You have an intellectual disability
- You have any condition or implant that makes it unsafe for you to have an MRI scan (confirm with trial site)
- (If you do not have schizophrenia) You have a history of significant problems with substance use, other than nicotine, alcohol, or mild-to-moderate cannabis use
- (If you do not have schizophrenia) You have been diagnosed with, or have a close family member diagnosed with, a significant psychiatric condition such as bipolar disorder, a psychotic disorder, or a Cluster A personality disorder (confirm with trial site)
