Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are 18 years of age or older (male or female).
- A lung specialist has determined you need a bronchoscopy (a procedure to look inside the airways) for a reason such as follow-up care, investigating a lung nodule, coughing up blood, persistent cough, mucus production, recurring bronchitis, or to help identify a condition.
- (Group 1 – COPD patients) You are a current or former smoker with a significant smoking history (at least 10 pack-years) and have been diagnosed with COPD, confirmed by a breathing test within the past year.
- (Group 2 – Smokers without COPD) You are a current or former smoker with a significant smoking history (at least 10 pack-years) but do not have any breathing obstruction, confirmed by a breathing test within the past year.
- (Group 3 – Non-smoker controls) You have never smoked, or you quit smoking more than 10 years ago with a limited smoking history, and you do not have any breathing obstruction, confirmed by a breathing test within the past year.
Who may not be able to join:
- You have widespread cancer or an advanced cancer diagnosis.
- You have another ongoing or progressing lung condition, such as asthma, tuberculosis, scarring of the lungs, or a recent or active lung infection.
- You currently use illegal drugs or consume alcohol to a significant extent (confirm with trial site).
- You are currently in prison or detained by a legal or administrative order, or are under involuntary hospitalisation.
- You are already taking part in another research study that has a waiting period before joining a new study.
- You have recent or current serious mental health difficulties that prevent you from fully understanding and agreeing to participate, or that require urgent medical care.
- You are an adult who is under a legal protection order, such as guardianship or curatorship.
- You are not able to give your informed consent to take part.
- You do not speak French and do not have a trusted person available to help you understand the study information.
- You are not registered with or covered by a French social security (health insurance) system.
- You are pregnant or currently breastfeeding.
- You decline to give your consent after being fully informed about the study.

Primary endpoints
The main objective is to evaluate the repair capacity of the bronchial epithelium of COPD subjects using the reconstituted bronchial epithelium model in air/liquid interface culture and the iPS model.
