Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are 18 years of age or older
  • You are showing signs of a possible stroke, including at least two symptoms on the FAST check (Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech problems), and you must have arm weakness as one of those symptoms
  • Your symptoms started (or you were last seen without symptoms) no more than 2 hours ago
  • You are able to give a brief agreement to take part (unless the ethics committee has allowed this step to be skipped)

Who may not be able to join:

  • You are in a coma or not responding to any stimulation
  • You have a serious ongoing illness, such as cancer, severe lung disease, severe dementia, severe heart failure, or a disability that means you already need help with everyday activities
  • You have a history of epilepsy, or you had a seizure when your symptoms began
  • You have had a recent head injury
  • Your blood sugar level is very low (below 2.8 mmol/L)
  • There is a clear medical reason why you should or should not take the study drug levetiracetam, including a known allergy to it
  • You are currently breastfeeding
  • You have a medical reason that requires you to stay in a specific head position, or a condition that would make it impossible to stay in either of the required head positions — for example, severe vomiting, being unable to lie down, or severe obesity making it very difficult to sit upright
