Who might be able to join this trial:

• People who are aged 18 or older
• People who have been diagnosed with esophageal cancer confirmed by tissue testing
• People whose cancer is at an advanced stage (Stage IV) or whose esophageal cancer has come back after previous treatment
• People whose treatment plan includes a type of immunotherapy that targets PD-1 or PD-L1 proteins
• People whose general health and ability to carry out daily activities falls within an acceptable range, as measured by a standard medical scale (ECOG score of 0–2)
• People whose blood counts, liver function, and kidney function meet the minimum levels required by the trial
• People who are able to provide written consent to participate

Who may not be able to join:

• People who have a hole (perforation) in their esophagus or who are vomiting blood
• People who have an active autoimmune disease, or a history of autoimmune conditions such as autoimmune hepatitis, lung inflammation, eye inflammation, bowel inflammation, or thyroid problems (some exceptions may apply — confirm with trial site)
• People who have taken immune-suppressing medications or steroids within the past 28 days (some exceptions may apply — confirm with trial site)
• People whose cancer got worse within 3 months of receiving PD-1 or PD-L1 immunotherapy
• People who have had a serious allergic reaction to large protein-based medicines, or to any ingredient in PD-1 or PD-L1 immunotherapy drugs
• People with serious uncontrolled heart conditions, including moderate-to-severe heart failure, unstable chest pain (angina), a heart attack within the past year, or a significant irregular heartbeat requiring treatment
• People with an immune system disorder present from birth or developed over time (such as HIV infection), active hepatitis B, active hepatitis C, or active tuberculosis
• People with an active infection or an unexplained fever above 38.5°C in the two weeks before joining the trial (fevers caused by the tumour itself may be excepted — confirm with trial site)
• People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or who are able to have children but are unwilling to use contraception during the trial
• People who, in the view of the treating doctor, have other serious conditions (including mental health conditions) or personal circumstances that could affect safety or the collection of trial data
