Who might be able to join this trial:

If you have Crohn's Disease or Ulcerative Colitis (IBD group):

  • You are 18 years old or older
  • You have read the information sheet and agreed to take part by signing a consent form
  • You are covered by health insurance
  • You have been diagnosed with Crohn's Disease or ulcerative colitis, at any stage or severity
  • Your Crohn's Disease or ulcerative colitis affects the large bowel (colon)
  • You are having a routine colonoscopy as part of your IBD care, or you are having bowel surgery because your IBD has gotten worse

If you do not have IBD (control group):

  • You are 18 years old or older
  • You have read the information sheet and agreed to take part by signing a consent form
  • You are covered by health insurance
  • You are having a colonoscopy due to a family history of bowel cancer, polyp monitoring, or bowel problems, or you are having bowel surgery for bowel cancer, a blockage, or a colostomy

Who may not be able to join:

If you have IBD:

  • You have a medical reason why you cannot have a colonoscopy or anaesthetic
  • Your Crohn's Disease or ulcerative colitis does not affect the colon
  • You are not able to make your own legal decisions
  • You live in a health or social care facility
  • You are in an emergency situation
  • You are currently detained or imprisoned
  • You are not registered with a social security scheme
  • You have not given or have refused to give your consent to take part

If you are in the control group:

  • IBD is discovered during your colonoscopy or bowel surgery
  • You have an immune-mediated inflammatory disease (a condition where the immune system attacks the body — confirm with trial site)
  • You have a medical reason why you cannot have a colonoscopy or anaesthetic
  • You are not able to make your own legal decisions
  • You live in a health or social care facility
  • You are in an emergency situation
  • You are currently detained or imprisoned
  • You are not registered with a social security scheme
  • You have not given or have refused to give your consent to take part
