Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are 18 years of age or older
  • You have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis and are scheduled to have a knee replacement on one knee (not both at the same time)
  • Your other knee (the one not being replaced) has not had steroid or biologic injections in the past year
  • You are not planning to have your other knee replaced within the next six months
  • Your other knee has no history of infection or significant injury (to the bone, ligaments, or tendons)
  • Your other knee causes you noticeable pain, rated more than 4 out of 10
  • Your other knee has a moderate-to-severe level of arthritis, confirmed by X-ray
  • You are able to read and understand English and can give your written agreement to take part in the study

Who may not be able to join:

  • Your arthritis is caused by something other than general "wear and tear," such as inflammatory arthritis (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis) or arthritis caused by a past injury
  • You have a condition affecting your memory or thinking (such as dementia or Alzheimer's disease) that may make it difficult to complete the study requirements
  • You have previously had a knee replacement or major bone surgery (such as a metal rod or plate) on either knee
  • You have a current or previous serious knee infection, or a problem with the tendon that straightens your knee
  • You have previously had keyhole (arthroscopic) surgery on either knee
  • You have a health condition that makes it unsafe for you to have an elective knee replacement
