Who might be able to join this trial:

• People who have been diagnosed with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
• People aged 40 years or older, male or female
• People who currently smoke or used to smoke, with a history of at least 20 pack-years (for example, one pack per day for 20 years, or two packs per day for 10 years)
• People whose breathing test results show a reduced ratio of air blown out quickly compared to total air capacity, falling below the normal range
• People whose total lung capacity on a breathing test increases by at least 10% after inhaling a reliever medication called salbutamol
• People whose resting lung air volume is higher than normal (at least 120% of what is expected, or above the upper limit of normal)
• People who experience at least a moderate level of breathlessness in daily life, as measured by a standard scale called the Modified Medical Research Council dyspnea scale (score of 2 or higher)
• People who have been medically stable, with no flare-ups of their COPD in the six weeks before joining
• People who are able to give informed consent and complete all study procedures

Who may not be able to join:

• People who have significant heart or lung conditions other than COPD, such as asthma, scarring of the lungs, high blood pressure in the lungs, or heart failure
• People who have diseases affecting their muscles or bones
• People who need oxygen during the day, or whose oxygen levels drop very low (below 80%) during exercise when breathing normal room air
• People who have any other condition that could cause breathlessness or difficulty exercising
• People who have any medical reason that makes exercise testing unsafe or unsuitable for them
