Cognitively normal group:

  • People who perform normally on standard memory and thinking tests
  • People who have no concerns or complaints about their memory or thinking

Subjective Cognitive Decline (SCD) group:

  • People who feel their memory has been persistently getting worse, rather than other areas of thinking
  • People who perform normally on standard memory and thinking tests
  • People who do not meet the criteria for mild cognitive impairment or dementia
  • People who first noticed memory concerns at age 60 or older
  • People whose memory concerns started within the last 5 years
  • People who are worried about their memory decline
  • People who feel their memory is worse compared to others of the same age

Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) group:

  • People who score in the impaired range on tests in at least one area of thinking (memory, language, or processing speed/planning)
  • People who have impaired scores across all three thinking areas (memory, language, and processing speed/planning)
  • People who score 9 or higher on a standard questionnaire measuring ability to carry out everyday activities (confirm with trial site)

Alzheimer's dementia group:

  • People who meet the medical criteria for dementia and have difficulty with daily activities
  • People who have memory problems related to recalling recent events
  • People who score 1 or higher on a standard scale used to measure dementia severity (confirm with trial site)

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have had a stroke
  • People with major depression or anxiety
  • People with other brain or nervous system conditions that affect thinking, such as Parkinson's disease, brain tumours, brain inflammation, or epilepsy
  • People whose cognitive difficulties were caused by a head injury
  • People with certain whole-body illnesses, such as thyroid problems, syphilis, or HIV
  • People with psychosis or a lifelong developmental intellectual disability
  • People who have used antibiotics, probiotics, prebiotics, or synbiotics in the past 3 months
  • People who are currently using corticosteroids, immune-boosting medications, or immune-suppressing medications
  • People who have had major surgery on their digestive tract within the past 5 years
  • People with serious gut or digestive conditions — such as irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, severe gastritis, or other significant digestion or absorption problems — that are known to affect gut bacteria
