Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who have triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) that has come back or spread and cannot be removed by surgery or cured
  • People who have not yet received any systemic (whole-body) treatment for their breast cancer that has come back or spread
  • People who were previously treated for early-stage breast cancer must have finished all that treatment at least 6 months before their cancer came back
  • People whose cancer and overall health make them a suitable candidate for the drug pembrolizumab combined with one of these chemotherapy options: paclitaxel, nab-paclitaxel, or gemcitabine plus carboplatin
  • People who had side effects from previous cancer treatments must have mostly recovered (to a mild or baseline level), except for hair loss or skin colour changes; people with hormone-related side effects that are well managed with hormone replacement therapy may also be eligible
  • People who currently have hepatitis B may be eligible if they have been on hepatitis B antiviral treatment for at least 4 weeks and the virus is no longer detectable in their blood
  • People with a history of hepatitis C may be eligible if the hepatitis C virus is no longer detectable in their blood

Who may not be able to join:

  • People whose breast cancer could potentially be treated with the aim of a cure
  • People whose TNBC has a PD-L1 combined positive score (a measure of a protein on tumour cells) of 10 or higher (confirm with trial site)
  • People who have already received systemic (whole-body) treatment for breast cancer that has come back or spread
  • People who have moderate or severe nerve damage (such as numbness, tingling, or pain) in their hands or feet
  • People with a history of serious dry eye disease, serious eyelid gland disease, or serious corneal conditions that affect healing
  • People with active inflammatory bowel disease currently requiring immune-suppressing medication, or those with a past history of inflammatory bowel disease
  • People with serious, uncontrolled heart or blood vessel disease
  • People whose cancer has spread only to the skin
  • People whose cancer has spread to internal organs in a way that may quickly become life-threatening
  • People living with HIV who also have a history of Kaposi's sarcoma or a condition called Multicentric Castleman's Disease
  • People who have another cancer that is currently active or has required active treatment within the past 5 years
  • People with active cancer spread to the brain or the lining around the brain; people whose brain metastases have already been treated and are stable on scans may be eligible
  • People with an autoimmune disease that has required systemic (whole-body) treatment in the past 2 years; standard hormone or replacement therapies are generally allowed
  • People who have had lung inflammation (pneumonitis) or interstitial lung disease in the past that required steroid treatment, or who currently have or are suspected to have these conditions
  • People who have both active hepatitis B and active hepatitis C at the same time
  • People who have had a stem cell or solid organ transplant
  • People who have not yet sufficiently recovered from a major surgery, or who have ongoing complications from surgery
