Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are an adult who has been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) by a specialist neurologist.
  • Your breathing tests show that you have too much carbon dioxide building up in your blood during the day, or you have symptoms of breathing difficulties (such as breathlessness when lying flat, waking up at night short of breath, or feeling very drowsy in the mornings), along with confirmed weakness of the main breathing muscle (the diaphragm).

Who may not be able to join:

  • You have a cognitive or memory condition that would make it difficult for you to understand the study and give informed consent.
  • You have another serious health condition — such as severe heart failure, severe COPD (a chronic lung disease), or very high body weight — that is causing or adding to your breathing problems.
  • You need to start breathing support urgently within 24 hours, or you are currently unwell enough to need hospital treatment (for example, IV antibiotics for a lung infection).
  • You do not have enough support from family, friends, or care professionals at home to help you use a breathing support machine safely.
  • You do not wish to use a breathing support machine at home.
