Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are 18 years of age or older
- You have had a stroke affecting the front part of the brain, and it started within the last 24 hours
- Your stroke severity falls within a moderate range based on a standard medical scoring test (confirm with trial site)
- You are receiving or have received clot-busting medication through a drip, or a procedure to remove or dissolve the clot in your blood vessel
- Before your stroke, you were able to look after yourself independently in day-to-day life
- You (or a legal representative on your behalf) are able and willing to sign a consent form to take part
Who may not be able to join:
- A brain scan taken before treatment shows a large area of early stroke damage (confirm with trial site)
- You have already been given the study drug (HUK) or a medicine containing it since your stroke started
- You have a known allergy to HUK or medicines containing it, or you have a history of allergies to other drugs or foods
- You have a history of blood clotting problems, low platelet levels, or active bleeding anywhere in the body (such as in the brain, stomach, gums, or skin), or you are taking blood-thinning medicines like warfarin or rivaroxaban, or you received heparin within 48 hours of your stroke
- You have been regularly taking a type of blood pressure medicine called an ACE inhibitor (such as captopril or enalapril) within the week before joining the trial
- You have significant liver disease or poor liver function, or you have significant kidney disease or are on dialysis
- You have a serious heart or lung condition that the medical team feels makes participation unsuitable
- You have reasons that make the standard stroke treatments used in this trial unsuitable for you (confirm with trial site)
- You have a serious illness where life expectancy is less than 3 months
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding, or you are a woman who could become pregnant and are not using effective contraception or do not have a recent negative pregnancy test
- You have a mental health condition, cognitive difficulties, physical limitations, or other circumstances that would prevent you from completing the trial
- You are currently taking part in another clinical trial
- The medical team has any other concern that makes participation unsuitable for you
