Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes
- People who have a type of eye condition called diabetic maculopathy (damage to the central part of the retina caused by diabetes), diagnosed using a standard set of criteria called the ETDRS guidelines
- People whose vision is reduced, falling between 6/9 and 6/90 on an eye chart, and who have significant swelling in the central part of the retina (more than 250 micrometres thick) as shown on a specialised eye scan called an OCT
- People who will be receiving a series of three monthly injections into the eye using one of two specific medications: aflibercept or bevacizumab
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have type 1 diabetes
- People who have type 2 diabetes and are currently using insulin
- People who have had injections of anti-VEGF medication into the eye within the past three months, or steroid injections into the eye within the past six months
- People who have previously had laser treatment or photodynamic therapy on the macula, or any eye surgery within the past three months
- People who are pregnant or currently breastfeeding
- People who have a history of blood clots or stroke, as this type of treatment may increase the risk of further cardiovascular complications
- People who have had a major surgery in the past year, or who have a major surgery planned in the coming months that could interfere with the treatment
- People with high blood pressure that is not well controlled
- People with known blood clotting disorders, or who are currently taking blood-thinning medication (other than aspirin)
- People who have a condition involving bleeding or severe damage in the central area of the retina (confirm with trial site)
- People whose eye pressure measures above 25 mmHg
- People who have abnormal new blood vessel growth on the iris (the coloured part of the eye) or bleeding inside the eye
