Who might be able to join this trial:
- Children and young people aged 12 months to 18 years with an ovarian cyst that is 4 cm or larger and is causing symptoms, where surgery has been recommended.
- Children and young people aged 12 months to 18 years with an ovarian cyst that is 4 cm or larger that has no symptoms, but surgery has been recommended because the cyst has stayed the same size or grown over time.
- Children and young people aged 12 months to 18 years with an ovarian cyst that is 4 cm or larger that has no symptoms, but surgery is planned for another related reason that was known about before the operation.
- Cases where both ovaries have a qualifying cyst — each ovary would be counted separately in the trial.
- Parents or legal guardians, and the patient themselves where appropriate, have given consent to participate; for patients who are not able to give consent due to their health or development, there should be no signs that they are unwilling to take part.
Who may not be able to join:
- Babies under 12 months of age with an ovarian cyst.
- People older than 18 years.
- People with a more complex cyst that contains solid parts (for example, a teratoma), or where there is any concern or suspicion of cancer.
- People with cysts located near but not on the ovary (known as paratubal or paraovarian cysts).
- People who have a medical condition that would make cyst removal surgery unsafe (for example, a serious blood clotting disorder).
- Cases where a signed consent form has not been provided, or where the parent, guardian, or patient does not have sufficient ability in German, French, or English to give informed consent.
