Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are a man or woman aged 18 or older
  • You have been diagnosed with esophageal cancer
  • You have been identified as a candidate for esophagus removal surgery (esophagectomy) at Hillman Cancer Center, UPMC Shadyside, or UPMC Passavant
  • Your surgery is scheduled at least 2 weeks from now
  • You are reasonably able to carry out daily activities (your doctor has rated your overall health and functioning at a certain level — confirm with trial site)
  • You are able to sign a written consent form agreeing to take part
  • You are able to understand, speak, and read English

Who may not be able to join:

  • You have a serious heart condition or uncontrolled high blood pressure, or you have significant difficulty standing or walking, which would make exercise unsafe for you
  • You have other health conditions or physical problems that would prevent you from safely taking part in an exercise program, as decided by the exercise specialist running the program
  • You are currently receiving chemotherapy or radiation therapy for a reason other than your esophageal cancer surgery
  • You currently have an active infection, bleeding, or low blood cell counts that could put you at greater risk of complications, as determined by the exercise specialist, your doctor, and/or nurse
