Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 18 or older
- People who have had an ischemic stroke (a stroke caused by a blocked blood vessel, not bleeding in the brain)
- People who are seen within 72 hours of when their stroke symptoms first started — including strokes that were noticed upon waking up or strokes affecting vision; the "start time" is counted from the last moment the person was known to be well
- People whose brain scans show a large blocked blood vessel in the front or back of the brain, caused by a build-up of fatty deposits in the arteries (a specific stroke type confirmed by medical assessment)
- People who have been treated with a specific procedure called the BASIS technique to open the blocked blood vessel (confirm with trial site)
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose brain scans show more than one blocked vessel or a combination of blockages in connected vessels at the time of arrival
- People with a history of atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm) or who have had heart valve surgery
- People who cannot safely take blood-thinning or anti-clotting medications — for example, those with haemophilia, low platelet counts, known clotting disorders, active internal bleeding, a history of bleeding in the brain, or conditions such as arteriovenous malformations or aneurysms
- People who have had a different type of stroke, such as a bleeding stroke (haemorrhagic stroke)
