Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 18 to 40 years
- People who have given their written agreement to participate
- People with a clinical suspicion of Crohn's disease, meaning they have had diarrhoea and/or abdominal pain for more than one month (or repeated episodes of these symptoms), along with certain test results or other signs, such as:
- A stool inflammation marker (calprotectin) result of 200 mg/kg or higher, OR
- A stool inflammation marker (calprotectin) result of 50 mg/kg or higher, plus at least one of the following: an elevated blood inflammation marker (CRP above 5 mg/L); a higher-than-normal platelet count in the blood; anaemia (low haemoglobin levels); a fever above 37.5°C lasting more than two weeks; a weight loss of 3 kg or more, or 5% or more of normal body weight; an abscess or abnormal channel (fistula) near the anus; or a family history of inflammatory bowel disease
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have previously had part of their intestine surgically removed
- People whose blood tests show markers associated with coeliac disease
- People whose stool tests have detected harmful bacteria
- People whose stool tests have detected intestinal parasites
- People with a suspected or confirmed blockage of the bowel
- People who have taken anti-inflammatory pain medications (such as ibuprofen or regular-dose aspirin) within the four weeks before joining, unless it is a low-dose preventative aspirin of 150 mg per day or less
- People who have taken opioid or opioid-like pain medications within the one week before joining
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People who may be unable to follow the study requirements, for example due to alcohol or recreational drug use
- People with a known bowel or digestive condition other than functional gastrointestinal disorders
- People with kidney problems, specifically a creatinine blood level above the normal range
