Who might be able to join this trial:
- Women aged 40 or older
- People who are able to give their informed consent to participate
- People diagnosed with a specific early stage of breast cancer (stage Tis through T2, with no spread to lymph nodes or other parts of the body), with a tumour smaller than 3 cm, as defined by provincial guidelines
- People who are able to complete health questionnaires electronically or on paper, either independently or with help from a caregiver, family member, friend, or research staff member
- People with a general health and activity level rated as 0, 1, or 2 on a standard scale used by doctors to measure how much a condition affects daily activities (confirm with trial site)
- People who have had a full physical examination, including a breast examination, within 8 weeks before enrolling in the trial
- People who are able to stay still in a stable position during treatment and tolerate any positioning devices that may be needed to safely deliver the radiation therapy
- People who are of childbearing potential and have had a negative pregnancy test within 4 weeks before radiation treatment begins
Who may not be able to join:
- People with a history of cancers other than breast cancer, unless the other cancer was a non-melanoma skin cancer treated successfully, an early-stage cancer removed by local surgery, or another cancer that was fully treated with no signs of return for 5 or more years
- People with an active cancer that is not currently under control
- People where fluid build-up (seroma) at the surgical site is not visible on imaging
- People who have a pacemaker or other cardiac device implanted on the same side of the body as the affected breast
- People who have had previous radiation therapy that would need to be taken into account when planning new treatment
- People whose treating doctor has determined they need an additional targeted dose of radiation (a radiation boost)
- People whose surgical margins were not clear of cancer cells after surgery
- People whose surgical cavity (the area left after tumour removal) cannot be clearly identified on imaging
- People known to carry a BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation
- People with serious health conditions that would make radiation therapy unsafe, such as certain connective tissue disorders like lupus or scleroderma
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
