Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are between 18 and 75 years old (any gender)
- You have been diagnosed with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (a specific type of esophageal cancer) confirmed by a tissue test, and the cancer either cannot be surgically removed or has come back after surgery
- You have at least one tumour that can be measured on a scan, and that tumour has not previously been treated with radiation
- You are generally able to carry out daily activities with little or no difficulty (confirm with trial site)
- You are expected to live for at least 12 weeks
- Your recent blood test results show your blood cell counts, liver function, and protein levels are within acceptable ranges (confirm with trial site for specific values)
- You are willing to take part, have signed a consent form, and are able to attend follow-up appointments
- You are able to provide a tissue sample (such as a biopsy) for laboratory testing, including a protein marker test called PD-L1
Who may not be able to join:
- You have been diagnosed with another type of cancer in the past 5 years
- Your cancer has spread to distant parts of the body, including certain lymph nodes above the collarbone
- Your tumour is growing into the windpipe or major blood vessels, or the doctor believes there is a high risk of a dangerous opening forming between the oesophagus and windpipe, or serious bleeding
- You have a history of, or currently have, an autoimmune disease (a condition where the immune system attacks the body)
- You have heart problems that are not currently under control
- You have an active infection or unexplained fever (unless it is clearly caused by the tumour)
- You have a history of, or currently have, scarring or inflammation of the lungs (confirm with trial site)
- You have a weakened immune system or active hepatitis (liver inflammation caused by a virus)
- You have previously been treated with PD-1 or PD-L1 immunotherapy drugs
- You are allergic to any of the medications used in this trial
- You have been taking immune-suppressing drugs or steroids above a certain dose within the 14 days before joining the trial (confirm with trial site for specific details)
- You have received radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy within the 4 weeks before joining the trial
- You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
