Who might be able to join this trial:
- People whose primary care provider is based at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN
- People aged between 50 and 100 years old
- People who experience at least moderate knee pain, as measured by a specific pain questionnaire called the ICOAP scale
- People who have been diagnosed with primary knee osteoarthritis (a condition where the cartilage in the knee breaks down over time)
- People who have not had repeated episodes of sudden warmth, redness, or swelling in the affected knee
- People whose physical examination shows tenderness along the inner or outer joint line of the knee, in the same area where the pain is felt
- People whose knee pain does not come from the tendons or soft tissue areas around the knee (such as below the inner knee, or the tendons connecting the thigh, calf, or kneecap muscles)
- People whose knee X-rays, taken within the last year, show a moderate level of joint damage (graded 2 or 3 on a standard scale called Kellgren-Lawrence)
- People who are able to complete surveys online by email
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose knee X-rays show either very mild (grade 1) or very severe (grade 4) joint changes on the Kellgren-Lawrence scale
- People who are pregnant, or women aged 54 or younger who could become pregnant and have not had a tubal ligation or hysterectomy, and whose partner has not had a vasectomy
- People who have previously had surgery inside the affected knee joint
- People who have received a corticosteroid (steroid) injection into the knee within the past 3 months, or a hyaluronan (joint lubricant) injection within the past 6 months — or within the past month if neither type of injection provided lasting relief
- People whose current knee pain was clearly caused by an injury to that knee within the last year
- People with a history of inflammatory joint conditions affecting that knee, such as rheumatoid arthritis, gout, pseudogout, or bleeding into the joint
- People with a history of painful hip osteoarthritis
- People with a history of psychosis, personality disorder, or an affective disorder (such as depression or bipolar disorder) that is not well controlled
- People with a history of fibromyalgia (a condition causing widespread pain and fatigue)
- People who are currently receiving active treatment for cancer
- People who currently use opioid (strong) pain medicines, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, or acupuncture regularly for their knees
