Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 or older
- People diagnosed with Stage II to IVb adenocarcinoma (a type of cancer) of the esophagus — if Stage IVb, only those with a small number of spread sites (called oligometastatic), where the treating doctor considers a full-dose chemotherapy and radiation treatment plan to be appropriate
- People who are currently receiving or have already received an initial course of chemotherapy, and who are planned to receive a full course of combined chemotherapy and radiation treatment (with or without surgery to remove the esophagus)
- People whose general health and ability to carry out daily activities falls within an acceptable range, as measured by a standard medical scale (ECOG score of 0–2) (confirm with trial site)
- People whose blood cell counts fall within required levels, based on a blood test taken within the past 30 days: enough white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets to safely participate
- People whose kidneys are functioning well enough, based on a blood test within the past 30 days
- People whose liver is functioning well enough, based on a blood test within the past 30 days — those with a condition called Gilbert Syndrome may have a slightly different acceptable range (confirm with trial site)
- Women under 65 who could become pregnant must have a negative pregnancy test within 14 days before joining the trial
- People who are able to use effective birth control throughout the treatment period, if there is a possibility of pregnancy
- People who have had or currently have another type of cancer, as long as that cancer or its treatment is not expected to affect the safety or results of this trial
- People who are able to understand the written consent form and are willing to sign it
Who may not be able to join:
- People under 18 years of age
- People whose cancer has spread widely to more than 5 distant sites in the body
- People whose esophageal cancer has come back after previous treatment (recurrent cancer)
- People who have previously received chemotherapy that has not been formally approved for cancer treatment
- People who have previously had radiation therapy to the same area of the body being treated in this trial, if the radiation fields would overlap
- Women who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
