Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People aged 50 years or older.
  • People who have experienced pain in one or more areas of the body for 6 months or more.
  • People whose knee pain meets the recognised criteria for osteoarthritis, including having visible bone changes on an X-ray and/or knee pain on most days over the past month for 3 months or more.

  • People who are willing to complete the 3-month study, attend Tai Chi sessions twice a week, receive rTMS (a non-invasive brain stimulation treatment), and take part in follow-up check-ins at 6 and 12 months.
  • People whose own doctor or a relevant member of their medical team has given approval for them to participate.
  • People who are able to pass a standard physical activity safety questionnaire given during a phone screening.
  • People who have access to a computer or suitable device for telehealth (online health appointments).
  • People who have internet access and no medical reasons preventing them from receiving rTMS treatment (confirm with trial site).

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have had a change in their mental health or pain medications in the past four months.
  • People who have a current diagnosis of mania, hypomania, unstable bipolar disorder, a psychotic disorder, or a history of psychosis.
  • People who have dementia, a neurological condition, cancer, heart disease, metabolic conditions, kidney disease, liver disease, or other serious health conditions that their doctor determines would prevent safe participation in Tai Chi or exercise.
  • People who have a current medical condition that limits their ability to safely take part in moderate exercise.
  • People who have met the criteria for alcohol or drug dependence within the past three months.
  • People who are currently practising Tai Chi.
