Who might be able to join this trial:

• Adults aged 18 or older, of any gender
• People who have had their esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (a type of throat/food pipe cancer) confirmed by a laboratory test
• People whose cancer has been assessed by scans (ultrasound, CT, and MRI) as being at a specific stage — described as T3 or a removable T4 — with or without nearby lymph node involvement
• People whose cancer has not spread to distant parts of the body, or has spread only to lymph nodes in the neck or above the collarbone
• People whose tumor measures 10cm or less in length
• People whose tumor does not affect a specific part of the lower esophagus called the dentate line
• People with a good general health and activity level, rated 0 or 1 on a standard medical scale (meaning fully active or able to carry out light activity)
• People with no blood disorders and no liver or kidney problems
• People whose blood test results meet specific healthy ranges for white blood cells, platelets, haemoglobin, liver enzymes, and kidney function (confirm with trial site for exact values)
• People who are willing and able to give informed consent to participate

Who may not be able to join:

• People whose cancer is assessed as an earlier stage (T1 or T2)
• People whose scans show the cancer has spread to distant parts of the body
• People who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or currently breastfeeding
• People who have previously had chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or immunotherapy
• People with a history of serious heart disease or significant heart failure
• People with a history of lung scarring (pulmonary fibrosis) or severe lung problems that would make surgery unsafe
• People who have needed ongoing medical treatment for an autoimmune disease within the past 2 years
• People with a history of immune system deficiency conditions, or those who require long-term steroid therapy
• People with a history of nerve-related conditions affecting movement or sensation
• People with a history of mental illness
• People with other health conditions that could affect their ability to safely complete the planned treatment, such as serious medication allergies (confirm with trial site)
• People currently dealing with an active infection that requires treatment
• People with a history of HIV, hepatitis B (HBV), or hepatitis C (HCV) infection
• People who have previously received a stem cell or solid organ transplant
