Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who receive their healthcare through the Department of Defense (DoD) and are registered as patients at David Grant Medical Center (DGMC)
- Adults between 45 and 75 years old who have been diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis (joint wear and tear) in one or both knees, based on medical and imaging assessments
- People who have had a knee X-ray within the last 2 years showing a moderate level of joint changes (scored 2 or 3 on a standard rating scale called the Kellgren-Lawrence classification)
- People who have had moderate to severe knee pain for at least 3 months, rating their average pain as 4 or higher on a 0–10 pain scale
- People who speak English
- People who are not pregnant and not breastfeeding
- People who have no known allergy to dextrose (a type of sugar), lidocaine (a numbing agent), or sulfite (a preservative)
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have previously had a knee replacement surgery
- People who have had surgery on the cartilage or the cushioning pads (meniscus) inside the knee
- People who have had any injection into the knee joint — including steroid injections, prolotherapy, or platelet-rich plasma — within the past 3 months
- People who have significant fluid build-up in the knee joint (confirm with trial site)
- People who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
- People with certain ongoing health conditions that make anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) unsafe to use, including moderate-to-severe kidney disease, coronary artery disease requiring certain heart procedures, a history of a major heart event, a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or above, inflammatory joint conditions such as gout or psoriatic arthritis, or a history of stomach or intestinal bleeding
- People who do not speak English
- People with a known allergy to dextrose, lidocaine, or sulfite
