Who might be able to join this trial:
Pilot Study
- People between 18 and 80 years old
- People who have already had a type of breast reconstruction surgery called a DIEP flap, where a portion of the reconstructed tissue remains visible (not fully placed under the skin)
- People who have signed a written consent form agreeing to take part in the study
Main Study
- People between 18 and 80 years old
- People who have signed a written consent form agreeing to take part in the study
- People who are planning to have, or are in the process of having, a single-breast DIEP flap reconstruction (either at the time of mastectomy or at a later date), where part of the reconstructed tissue will remain visible (not fully placed under the skin)
Who may not be able to join:
Pilot Study
- People who have had radiation therapy applied to the reconstructed flap area after surgery
- People who have nerve-related conditions such as diabetic nerve damage, nerve damage from alcohol use, nerve damage caused by chemotherapy or other medications, or any other significant nerve condition affecting the body's extremities
- People who are currently smoking
- People who have a language barrier that would prevent participation
- People who are pregnant or currently breastfeeding
Main Study
- People whose reconstruction involves the flap being completely placed under the skin with no visible portion remaining
- People who need reconstruction on both breasts (double DIEP surgery)
- People who have had radiation therapy applied to the reconstructed flap area after surgery
- People who have nerve-related conditions such as diabetic nerve damage, nerve damage from alcohol use, nerve damage caused by chemotherapy or other medications, or any other significant nerve condition affecting the body's extremities
- People who are currently smoking
- People who have a language barrier that would prevent participation
- People who are pregnant at the time the DIEP flap surgery is planned, or who are currently breastfeeding
