Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People aged 18 to 65 years, of any sex
  • People who have been diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis
  • People whose diabetes was diagnosed at least 3 months after their chronic pancreatitis diagnosis
  • People who have never taken diabetes or blood sugar-lowering medications, or who stopped taking such medications at least 8 weeks before the screening visit

  • People who have a known allergy, intolerance, or medical reason preventing them from taking metformin
  • People whose fasting C-peptide level (a blood test related to insulin production) is below 0.3 nmol/L
  • People who have had an acute (sudden, severe) flare-up of chronic pancreatitis at the time of enrolling, or within the 3 months before enrolling
  • People with a history of moderate-to-severe heart failure, unstable chest pain (angina), or other serious heart or cardiovascular conditions
  • People who have had a cancer diagnosis (other than certain non-melanoma skin cancers) within the past 5 years
  • People who have had part or all of their pancreas surgically removed
  • People who have had, or are planning to have, weight-loss (bariatric) surgery
  • People who have previously received an organ transplant
  • People who have used steroid tablets or injections (systemic glucocorticoids) within the 3 months before enrolling, or who plan to use them during the study (inhaled steroids are allowed)
  • People with a history of certain blood conditions, such as hemolytic anemia or ongoing need for blood transfusions, that could make HbA1c test results unreliable
  • People with other conditions that require blood sugar-lowering treatment, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • People whose fasting blood sugar level is above 11.1 mmol/L at screening and, in the treating doctor's judgment, needs immediate treatment
  • People with severe psychiatric disorders or other health conditions that the trial team considers unsuitable for participation in research
  • People who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant during the study period
  • People who the trial investigator considers unsuitable for participation for any other reason
