Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged between 60 and 85 who have been clinically diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease
- People who scored 20 or below on a memory and thinking test called the Hong Kong version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (HK-MoCA)
- People who scored 10 or above on a questionnaire that measures behavioural and psychological symptoms related to dementia (called the NPI-12)
- People whose Alzheimer's disease medications have remained unchanged for the past 4 weeks
- People who have a caregiver who is able to help them take the study products, collect stool samples, and attend follow-up appointments
- People who are able to give informed consent to participate
Who may not be able to join:
- People who also have Parkinson's disease or another brain or nervous system condition that affects their ability to carry out daily activities
- People who have a history of stroke
- People who have a history of severe organ failure (such as advanced liver disease), kidney failure requiring dialysis, or HIV infection
- People with a confirmed active cancer diagnosis
- People who have had surgery on the small or large intestine, or who have had their appendix, uterus, or gallbladder removed in the past 6 months
- People taking antipsychotic, antidepressant, or sedative medications, unless the dose has been stable for the past 3 months
- People who are unable to swallow or take fluids by mouth
- People who have used antibiotics, probiotics, or prebiotics in the past 2 weeks
- People who are intolerant to probiotics or lactose
