Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who are 18 years of age or older
  • People who are willing and able to give written consent and follow the study procedures
  • People who had a stroke at least 6 months ago
  • People who have weakness or paralysis on one side of the body as a result of a stroke
  • People who score below 35 on a standard arm movement and function test called the Upper Extremity Fugl-Meyer Assessment (confirm with trial site)
  • People who are not currently receiving regular occupational therapy services
  • People who have been cleared by their doctor to take part in the study
  • People who have at least a basic understanding of English

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have had a Botox injection in the affected arm or hand within the last 4 months
  • People who have very severe muscle stiffness (a score of 4 on the Modified Ashworth Scale) in any joint of the affected arm (confirm with trial site)
  • People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • People who have an implanted heart device such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, or heart assist device, or an implanted pump for muscle stiffness, or cochlear implants
  • People who have bone fractures that have not yet healed
  • People who have severe tightening or locking of the joints in their arms that limits movement
  • People who currently have cancer, or who have been in cancer remission for less than 5 years
  • People who have a joint, bone, or muscle condition, injury, or surgery that would affect their ability to use their arms
  • People who have had a procedure or surgery on the spinal cord within the past year
  • People who have a traumatic brain injury or other neurological condition that could affect the study
  • People who have had a skull fracture within the past 6 months
  • People who do not speak English
