Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have had a single stroke that occurred more than 6 months ago
- People who have weakness in the hand and arm on one side, but who can still show some visible finger extension movement
- People who are right-handed
- People who are between 18 and 85 years old
- People who have given their written agreement to take part
Who may not be able to join:
- People who are under legal guardianship or protection orders, currently detained, or who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People with serious or life-threatening health conditions that could affect their ability to complete the study
- People who have significant difficulty understanding instructions, as measured by a specific language and comprehension test (confirm with trial site)
- People who have severe, fixed stiffness in the fingers or wrist, or who have had botulinum toxin (e.g. Botox) injections in the forearm or hand within the last 12 weeks
- People with a history of a degenerative neurological condition (such as a progressive brain or nerve disease) or who have previously had part of their skull removed
- People with skin wounds or damage on the affected arm that would prevent the use of muscle stimulation equipment
- People with skin wounds or damage on the scalp that would prevent the placement of brainwave monitoring equipment (EEG)
- People currently taking part in another medical research study that could affect recovery of the affected hand
- People who have previously taken part in a study involving a type of brain stimulation called rTMS (beyond single-pulse use) or a brain-computer interface (BCI)
- People who do not wish to be told if an unexpected brain abnormality is found on an MRI scan during the study
