Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are between 50 and 80 years old
- You have had one stroke, and it happened more than 6 months ago but less than 15 years ago
- You have at least a small amount of movement in your ankle (able to bend your foot upward at least 5 degrees on your own)
- You are able to walk 10 metres (about 33 feet) on your own, with or without a walking aid such as a cane
- You are able to score 6 or higher out of 10 on a short memory and thinking test
- You do not have skin allergies, such as redness or itching, when electrical stimulation pads are placed on your skin
- You are able to understand and follow instructions, and are willing to give your formal agreement to take part
Who may not be able to join:
- You have certain other health conditions, such as varicose veins, nerve damage in your feet or legs, cancer, a muscle or joint injury, leg swelling, open wounds, or you take medicines that increase your risk of blood clots
- Your blood pressure at rest is 160/100 or higher even when taking blood pressure medication, or you have heart problems such as heart failure, unstable chest pain, have had bypass surgery, or use a pacemaker
- You have received botulinum toxin (such as Botox) injections in your leg within the last 6 months
- You have a history of epilepsy, or you have a cochlear implant, a deep brain stimulator, or any metal implants in your head or neck
- You are currently doing resistance (strength) training, high-intensity exercise, or long-duration cardio exercise (confirm with trial site)
- You are unable to feel pain due to paralysis, or are otherwise unable to tell someone if you are feeling discomfort
