Who might be able to join this trial:

• You are willing to take part, have signed a consent form, and are able to attend follow-up appointments
• You are aged 70 or older (any gender)
• You are generally active and able to care for yourself, with only mild limitations on physical activity (confirm with trial site)
• You have been diagnosed with a specific type of oesophageal cancer called squamous cell carcinoma, confirmed by a tissue or cell sample
• You have at least one tumour that can be measured on a scan, and that area has not previously been treated with radiotherapy (or, if it has, there is confirmed evidence the cancer has grown back)
• Your cancer is at Stage II through to Stage IVB, where Stage IVB only includes spread to lymph nodes near the collarbone or abdomen — not spread to other distant parts of the body — and your doctors believe you can tolerate radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and targeted therapy together
• Your doctors expect you to live for at least 6 months
• Your blood counts are within acceptable levels — including haemoglobin, white blood cells, and platelets (confirm specific values with trial site)
• Your liver and kidney function tests are within acceptable ranges (confirm specific values with trial site)
• A heart scan shows your heart is pumping blood normally (at least 50% efficiency)
• If you are a woman who could become pregnant, you agree to use contraception during the study and for 6 months after, have a negative pregnancy test within 7 days before joining, and are not breastfeeding
• If you are a man, you agree to use contraception during the study and for 6 months after it ends

Who may not be able to join:

• You have received certain targeted cancer treatments (EGFR monoclonal antibodies or EGFR-TKI medicines) in the past 6 months
• You have taken part in another interventional clinical trial in the past 30 days
• You have serious other health conditions such as heart failure, uncontrolled irregular heartbeat, severe kidney disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, thyroid problems, certain mental health conditions, diabetes, or severe chronic diarrhoea (more than 7 times a day) that the trial team feels makes participation unsuitable
• You have cancer that has spread to the brain and is causing symptoms, or symptoms have only been controlled for less than 3 months
• You have a history of another type of cancer, unless it was fully cured more than 5 years ago, or was a specific type of skin or cervical cancer that has been cured (confirm with trial site)
• You currently have an active infection or infectious disease
• You have cancer affecting multiple separate areas of the oesophagus, or there are signs of a hole or opening forming in the oesophagus
• Scans suggest your tumour has grown into, or is very likely to grow into, important blood vessels
• You are known to be allergic to any of the medicines used in this trial
• You have moderate or worse nerve damage in your hands or feet, or significant hearing loss (confirm with trial site)
• You are pregnant or breastfeeding
• You have a history of substance misuse or a mental health condition that affects your ability to take part
• The trial team believes for any other reason that you are not suitable to participate, or you are unwilling or unable to sign the consent form
