Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You have been diagnosed with a spinal cord injury, stroke, or other neurological condition (for at least 12 months) that has caused permanent movement problems in both arms and hands, with no expectation of recovery.
  • OR you have been diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) or another progressive neurological condition that is well understood, and your neurologist expects that within 1 year your condition will reach the level of arm and hand weakness described above.
  • You are expected to live for at least 12 months.
  • You can communicate — either by speaking, using a computer, or using a communication aid — and you can work in English.
  • You have a reliable caregiver who is consistently available to support you.

Who may not be able to join:

  • You have health conditions that would make surgery or the procedure medium to high risk for serious complications.
  • Your Body Mass Index (BMI) is over 40 (classified as morbid obesity).
  • You have a history of seizures or epilepsy that has been difficult to control.
  • You have a history of diabetes that has been difficult to control.
  • You need MRI scans on a regular basis for any ongoing medical condition.
  • You have a weakened immune system, whether from a medical condition you developed or one you were born with.
  • You have smoked or used tobacco products more than once a month in the past year.
  • You have a diagnosed psychiatric or psychological disorder.
  • You have pre-existing damage to the specific area of the brain relevant to this study (confirm with trial site).
  • You have any other condition that the study doctor believes would make it unsafe for you to take part or undergo the implant procedure (confirm with trial site).
