Group 1: Alzheimer's Study
Who might be able to join this trial:
- People between the ages of 18 and 80
- People with early-stage ("pre-clinical") Alzheimer's disease — meaning those whose thinking and memory tests are normal, but whose biological markers for Alzheimer's have come back positive
- People with a confirmed diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease or dementia who are able to understand and sign a consent form
Who may not be able to join:
- People with advanced Alzheimer's disease or dementia
- People with a known or self-reported allergy to Afrin or Tetracaine HCL, or similar medications in the same drug family
- People currently experiencing active sinus or nasal infection symptoms
- People with certain nasal or sinus conditions that would prevent a small tissue sample being safely taken — for example, prior surgery on the sinuses or skull base in that area, a tumour in that nasal region, or nasal polyps affecting the smell-related area (confirm with trial site)
- People with Parkinson's disease
- People who are unwilling or unable to complete a nasal camera examination (nasal endoscopy)
- People who are unable to read or speak English
- People who are unable to give legal consent to participate
Group 2: Act-Seq Study / Non-Alzheimer's Controls
Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 18 years or older
- People already being seen by a doctor for nose, sinus, or smell-related conditions
- People who are already scheduled to have an unrelated nasal surgical procedure using a camera
Who may not be able to join:
- People with a known or self-reported allergy to Afrin or Tetracaine HCL, or similar medications in the same drug family
- People who are unwilling or unable to complete a nasal camera examination (nasal endoscopy)
- People who are unable to read or speak English
- People who are unable to give legal consent to participate
